Smartphone Filmmaking Training in the UK and Europe

Smartphone film training Tbilisi training

“An absolutely fantastic course. Exactly the right pace, hugely informative and great fun.”
Victoria Penn, Abergavenny, Wales

My smartphone filmmaking training will teach you to make effective short videos with your iPhone, iPad or Android phone. We’ll look at how to use video to explain things, show activities and promote your work on YouTube and social media.

Most people who come on my courses have little or no experience of making videos. Each course is carefully structured to meet your specific needs.

Tailor-made training

My training is flexible and I teach face to face (UK/Europe) and online.  You could just choose a short course (a day or half-day) covering the basics. Or I can provide a longer course over several weeks, with mentoring  and feedback.

I can train you to make complete videos using free apps on your phone such as iMovie or VN Editor. I can also teach you to shoot on your phone and edit on desktop programs such as iMovie, Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere.

My iPhone training can also cover advanced iPhone Pro features like Cinematic and Action mode, and alternative camera apps like BlackMagic Camera and Filmic Pro.

Sample course content

This is the content of a typical one-day beginners’ course:

  • The ‘language’ of film and how videos tell stories
  • Structuring your story: key elements you need to include
  • Choosing the correct video formats for YouTube, Instagram, Tiktok and Facebook.
  • Choosing the right phone and camera app settings for video.
  • What to consider when you’re setting up and filming a shot: light, composition and exposure.
  • Six kinds of shot you need.
  • How to plan shots that will edit together smoothly.
  • Using separate shots to show an activity;
  • Filming a scene with movement.
  • How to record good sound using the built-in microphone.
  • Alternative microphones you could use.

You’ll work in pairs or small groups to practise filming and to plan, shoot and edit short film sequences.

You’ll get a detailed PDF handout and a set of ‘cheat sheets’ to use when filming.
